Embertonejubalflute is a stately musical instrument played by the Elves of the world. It is composed of 40 metal jubal pipes, soundboard, and one foot piston. The Elf wind team blows across an opening in the top of each jubal pipe to produce sound. The instrument has 16 keys for changing tones, which are used to play melodies with repeating sections or cadences that include arpeggiations or octaves. This blog post gives an overview of Embertonejubalflute and discusses its history, construction process, performance notes, musical examples for how it can be used to create different types of songs. The Embertonejubalflute was created by Robb Gordon, an amateur instrument builder. The instrument was built over several months in Robb's home workshop, which contains a dedicated woodworking area, metal working area, and electronics workstation. The jubal pipes range in length from 9 to 36 inches (228 to 914 mm) and are made from wrought iron welding rod stock. To ensure a smooth surface finish, the pipes were painstakingly bead blasted prior to assembly. Each pipe is fitted into a custom jig which holds it in place while thin-wall brass tubing is welded into the end of each pipe for coupling with the soundboard. The soundboard is made from a single piece of MDF that is lapped to the shape of the jubal pipes and then finished with a hard clear epoxy finish. The edge of the soundboard was sanded and then drilled and routed by hand to match up to the shape of each pipe end. A custom-designed brass fitting system was created to couple each pipe with its corresponding key. Each key has three stops: one lever for each key, and one pin stop for each key. The levers fit into channeled grooves in the soundboard, while the pins sit under a larger channeled surface which is grooved along its length. The piston is made from a hollow brass tube that is long, with the end plugged. The hand lever fits into a cavity in the end of the piston, which is glued into place with urethane glue. The piston was then assembled using epoxy and flat brass nails to hold it together while boiling water was applied to the glue joint. The instrument was first played by Robb Gordon on March 20, 2013 at his home in North Royalton, Ohio. After reading about Fender's "Voltage Control" guitar pickup system, he decided to build an electronic control system for his instrument. He created the system using a microcontroller-based circuit board, which is powered by a 12V DC wall adapter. The circuit board acts as the heart of the instrument by powering the LEDs, reading user input signals, and converting these signals into MIDI messages for controlling external sound generators. The control system uses two switches (one for each hand) and three potentiometers (one for each knee). The Embertonejubalflute can be played to create musical notes with individual pitches. However, there are many ways to use this instrument to create music. Riffs are short melodic phrases used in popular music to provide a catchy musical background or counterpoint for other elements of the song.
